Steps

   1. Before cleaning with either of the two suggested light cleaning methods, check for problem spots. Wipe off any splats, stains, sticky areas etc. – window spray cleaner is helpful. Wipe these dry with paper towels before proceeding.
2. Tie back any curtains or other soft furnishings around the blinds.

Clean with Your Hands

   1. Place the blinds in the shut position.
2. Obtain a soft cotton glove. Alternatively, you might like to purchase a dust-attractant glove or a clothes dryer sheet. Even kitchen paper towels will work if necessary but be sure to replace them regularly as you clean. Clothes dryer sheets are great because they reduce the static electricity.
3. Keep the glove dry for wooden slats. Oily or damp gloves will leave streaks. For synthetic polymers or metallic slats, you can use a slightly dampened glove (water, or a non-sticky cleaning spray). If you use a cleaning spray, check the suitability of the spray for your material. You do not want to end up leaving sticky streaks on your blinds that will attract dirt.
4. Run your fingers lightly over the slats. Do this from center to edge, right and left. This helps to ensure that additional dust is not run across the entire slat from one end to the other.
5. Open the blind and shut it back the opposite way. Again run your fingers lightly over the slats. If easier, open the slats and run your fingers under the slats.
6. Change or dust off the glove or cleaning sheet regularly to prevent creating further build-up on the slats.

Clean with the Vacuum Cleaner

   1. Close the slats.
2. Prepare the vacuum cleaner. Affix the soft duster brush attachment to the nozzle. Do not use a nozzle without this attachment, as you may scratch or chip the slats.
3. Hold the blind with one hand to prevent it banging as you move the vacuum nozzle over it.
4. Vacuum from the center outwards, both left and right.
5. Repeat until blind is finished on one side. Open and shut the slats the other way and clean the underside.

Deep Cleaning (Metallic and Synthetic Polymer Blinds Only)

   1. Ensure that the blinds are completely lowered. Shut the slats.
2. Remove the blinds. Follow the instruction manual for the method of removal. Be sure to keep an eye on any loose pieces and not lose them.
3. Place the blind in the base of a bathtub. Fold it back where it is too long. Ensure that the blind is fully covered by warm water. Add a simple cleaning solution, such as dish detergent or bleach.
4. Leave it to soak for half an hour. Scrub gently with a soft cleaning brush. It the blind suffers from a deep build-up of grime, it may need to soak overnight.
5. Rinse the blinds. Empty the cleaning water. Either use a bucket to slosh fresh water over the blind or run the shower over the blind until all soap residue is removed.
6. Hang over the side of the bath or hang over railings etc. outdoors if the weather is fine. Allow to dry. If needed, a hairdryer set on cool can speed up the drying process.
7. Return to hanging position once dry.

Tips

    * Use a step stool or small stepladder to provide you with balance for the light cleaning methods. If you are cleaning many blinds and you do not have good upper arm strength, removing the blinds may be the best option even with the light cleaning method.
* Use the dry cotton glove method or a small woolen duster weekly to prevent build up of dust.
* If desired, ask at your local window furnishings store for suggested cleaning products if you are using the soak-in-the-bath method. There are some products that will reduce or eliminate the need for scrubbing and will also ensure that the cords are clean. Check that these products are not harmful to you or your family, however.
* Do not toss away old socks, as they make great slat cleaners. Just put one on your hand, slide the blind between your thumb, and and wipe the slat back and forth, cleaning both the top and bottom of the blind at the same time.
* Put a sock on each hand. One with ammonia, or cleaning solution and the other dry. Wash the blind with the wet sock, and dry with the dry sock on the other hand.

Warnings

    * Do not deep clean wooden Venetians – it may warp the wood through dampness.

If you were to ask any woman (or man) what their favorite thing to clean is, they might have different answers. But if you were to ask what they hate most in the house to clean, almost all of them would more than likely say that they hate to clean the blinds. The blinds seem to be the hardest thing to clean. They have so many little surfaces that need to be cleaned. You cannot just close the blinds and wipe then down for a thorough cleaning. That is good for a touch-up. You can use a vacuum or a dust rag. But your blinds need to be cleaning thoroughly at least a couple of times a year. This is especially true if you have not kept up with cleaning maintenance. Dust, dirt and grease will start to cake on each little blind and you will not be able to just wipe it off. It will need to be a little more complicated than that.

First, you will need to remove the blinds from the window. You will not be able to clean them properly while they are hanging. Some people try to clean them in the bathtub. But they usually end up getting soaked and frustrated.

The easiest way to clean your blinds can be used on any sort of blind. You can use this way to clean vertical blinds, mini blinds and horizontal blinds. Cloth blinds should not be cleaned this way. They only need to be vacuumed really well. But this is the perfect way to clean your other blinds.

The best way to clean your blinds is to bring them outside and lay them on a large clean towel or blanket. Do not use your favorite things because they will probably get ruined. Open the actual blind all of the way and keep the individual blinds closed. Have a bucket nearby full of soap and water. Usually windex or pine sol works the best. Then clean the blinds by scrubbing them with a soft bristle brush. After the front is finished, reverse the blinds so that the back side is now on the front. Scrub the blinds completely. Then get your hose and rinse the soap off of the blinds. Hang the blinds over something to rinse and then to dry off. If you do not want to take a chance and see spots, then you can hand dry each individual blind.

There are some ways to clean your blinds with a little less effort than was described above. You can purchase a tricket at any cleaning store. A tricket looks like a squeegee with tongs. There is one set with sponges on both sides and one with squeegees on both sides. This way you can do both sides of your blinds at one time.

If this still sounds like too much work, you could always have someone else clean the blinds for you. Most housecleaners will perform this task for a fee. There are also some professional blinds cleaners that could clean your blinds for an even bigger fee. See what works best for you!

Regular maintenance will cut down on the frequency of deep cleaning.

   1. Extend your blinds all the way.
2. Tilt the slats up (or to one side if they are vertical) and dust lightly with a cloth or duster.
3. Tilt the slats down (or to the opposite side if they are vertical) and dust the other side lightly with a cloth or duster.
4. As an alternative, try using a soft cloth glove. Hold each slat between your thumb and forefinger; gently run them along each slat. To avoid damage, don’t exert too much pressure or crimp the slats.
5. A vacuum cleaner may also be used. Place the soft brush attachment on the hose and run very lightly over the slats first in their up position then in their down position. You should first test a small area of the blinds to make sure the suction is not too great. Some vacuums may damage the slats.
6. For individual stains on any given slat, spray with window cleaner, wait 1 to 2 minutes, and wipe with a soft cloth. If your blinds are cloth, test this on a hidden area first.

A Cleaning Trick(et)

To save time and energy, try using a “tricket.” A tricket is a tool that looks like a multi-pronged squeegee. One type has sponges on both sides, one type has squeegees on both sides, and they clean both sides of the slats without taking the blinds down. They are not perfect but they can save you a lot of hassle and can be purchased at most janitorial supply stores.

Some carpet/upholstery cleaning services will clean your Venetian blinds for a fee. Although pricey, it may be an option, depending on your circumstances.
Additional Tips

Once you’re blinds are cleaned rub each slat with a dryer sheet. This will help cut down on the amount of dust and grime that accumulates.

It is always best to use cleaning products and detergents that are natural and gentle to the environment. With today’s increased awareness such products are easier to find..

So you want to get your hands dirty and finally get around to some venetian blinds cleaning? Here is what you need to do to clean venetian blinds inside.

What you will need:

    * Bathtub
* Cleaning liquid (they type of cleaner you use should be dependent on the material your blinds are made of)
* Soft scrub brush
* Old towels

Instructions:

   1. Fill tub with warm soapy water.
2. Remove the blinds from the window, leaving the hardware intact. Assemblies for Venetian blinds vary, and you may need a screwdriver for this step. CAUTION: It is always recommended that you have a helper, especially if you need to use a step stool or ladder to reach the top of the blinds for removal.

      Take the blinds (one at a time) and place in the tub, fully extended, slats closed. TIP: Depending on the size of your blinds, it may be necessary to fold them over.
3. Let soak for 15 minutes.
4. Using the soft scrub brush, scrub each slat to remove dirt and grime.
5. Flip the blinds, and scrub again.
6. Drain the dirty water.
7. Turn on the shower and rinse the blinds (both sides). TIP: A hand-held shower nozzle is quite handy for this step.
8. Place the blinds on their side (leaning against the edge of the tub) and let the water drain.
9. After about 20 minutes, place on the opposite side to avoid pooling of excess water in the crevices, let air dry for another 20 minutes. TIP: If you’re short on time, use a hair dryer set at its lowest temperature to help speed up the drying process. strong>CAUTION: Do not hold the hair dryer too close to the slats, or use it on a high temperature, or you may damage the slats.
10. Towel off any remaining water, and re-hang.

So you want to get your hands dirty and finally get around to some venetian blinds cleaning? Here is what you need to do to clean venetian blinds outside.

What you will need:

    * Large blankets or tarps (to lay your blinds on)
* Bucket
* Cleaning liquid (they type of cleaner you use should be dependent on the material your blinds are made of)
* Hose
* Soft scrub brush or Sponge mop
* Old towels

Instructions:

   1. Remove the blinds from the window, leaving the hardware in place. Assemblies for Venetian blinds vary, and you may need a screwdriver for this step. CAUTION: It is always recommended that you have a helper, especially if you need to use a step stool or ladder.
2. Take the blinds (one at a time) outside and place on top of one of the blankets or tarps, making sure they are fully extended, slats closed.
3. Mix cleaning liquid with water in the bucket (typically 1 part cleaner to 4 parts water for non-fabric blinds). TIP: Car wash liquid or vinyl cleaning products work best, especially if you have stuck-on dirt or grease, but liquid dish soap will work well also.
4. Pour the bucket of soapy liquid over the blinds, being sure to wet all slats.
5. Using the soft scrub brush or sponge mop, scrub the slats thoroughly.
6. Turn the blinds over, and repeat procedure on the other side.
7. Hose off all soapy residue. TIP: Hose off both sides thoroughly—if soap dries on the slats, it will attract excess dirt and grime.
8. Mop up excess water from the blinds with the towels.
9. Bring blinds indoors and lay flat (on towel) to dry completely before re-hanging.

2. Using a stepstool, if necessary, begin vacuuming at the top of the blind. Using one hand, hold the blind steady and secure so that the slats don’t bang against the woodwork or rub together too much. With your other hand, use the dusting brush vacuum attachment to brush a few slats at a time from the center out to the right edge and then back from the center to the left edge of the blind.

3. Repeat this procedure, working your way from the top down to the bottom of each blind.

4. Then twist the rotating bar all the way in the other direction so the back side of the blinds are facing toward you and repeat.

To clean venetian blinds without a vacuum:

1. Follow the same procedure as above using a soft, dry cloth instead. Don’t use a wet or oily cloth as this will leave streaks.

2. Another method is to use clean soft gloves (ideally made of cotton) on both hands to dust the surface of each slat.

Because venetian blinds are usually hung over windows, they are exposed to corrosive elements and moisture more so than other metal materials inside the home. Chips or scratches make the material even more vulnerable.

When handling painted metal venetian blinds, be careful not to cut yourself on sharp edges, and try not to let the slats bang or scratch against one another.

One common problem with venetian blinds is that the slats become creased and bent by people peeking through to look outside. Once a thin metal slat becomes damaged in this way, it cannot be repaired back to its original condition. The whole blind needs to be disassembled, slat-by-slat, and restrung around a new piece. This can be prevented by simply using the rotating bar to open the slats for viewing.

Venetian blinds are great for blocking out light, providing privacy and, unfortunately, collecting dust. A gentle wipe with a feather duster once a week helps, but a through cleaning is necessary several times a year to remove built-up grime and dust that detracts from the air quality inside the home. Below are a few tips on venetian blinds cleaning.

Things You’ll Need:

* Blinds
* Bathtub
* Vinegar
* Towel

Step 1: Remove Venetian Blinds From Window And Put them In A Bathtub

Open the blinds fully before removing them from their window tracking and placing them in the bathtub. If you don’t have a bathtub, a child’s plastic pool works just as well.

Step 2: Fill The Bathtub With Warm Water To Wash Venetian Blinds With

Fill the bathtub with warm water about three quarters of the way full or enough to completely cover the blinds.

Step 3: Add Vinegar

Add 1 gallon of white vinegar to the bathwater and swish it around with your hands. The vinegar will corrode the grime on the blinds without eating into the blinds themselves.

Step 4: Let The Venetian Blinds Soak

Let the blinds soak in the bathwater until the dirt has completely disintegrated. Stir the water to loosen surface dirt from the blinds.

Step 5: Rinse In Cold Water

Empty the bathtub and rinse the tub and blinds in cold water. Use the shower or showerhead attachment. Cleaning your bathtub fully after finishing with the blinds is highly recommended.

Step 6: Air Dry The Venetian Blinds Outside

Allow blinds to dry outside on a large clean towel in the summertime. During cold weather, pat dry blinds using a soft clean towel before hanging back on the window.

Step 7: To Maintain Your Venetian Blinds Dust Them Regularly

Dust blinds weekly to help maintain the blinds and prevent the build up of moisture and grime. An old sock on the end of a broom handle is a good way to get between the slats.
